Earthquakes: Unpredictable and Deadly

Every year earthquakes are responsible for a large number of deaths and vast destruction in various parts of the world. Most of these damaging earthquakes occur either in a narrow belt that surrounds the Pacific Ocean or in a line extending from Burma to the Alps in Europe. Some of the destruction is directly caused by the quakes. An example of this is the collapse of buildings as a result of vibration. Other damages result from landslides, tsunamis, or major fires, which are initiated by the quakes. There are about a million quakes a year. In order to minimize the damage and to alleviate some of the suffering resulting from earthquakes, scientists are working on ways to facilitate accurate predictions.

Terrible casualties are the result of earthquakes. People are trapped in collapsed buildings or under rubble collapsing into the street. The worst thing to do in a quake is to rush into the street. The danger of being hit by falling glass and debris is many times greater outside the building than inside. Earthquakes, the deadliest and strongest force of nature, will never be controlled, and will never be prevented.

Buildings, as foundations give way beneath them, are damaged when a landslide or liquefaction of terrain causes the ground to become unstable. Ground movement changes the whole landscape. Landslides into lakes or reservoirs cause flooding downstream. This kind of damage is not unique to earthquakes, but can be triggered by a quake. Landslides are deadly when least expected. There have been many landslides as the result of earthquakes.

Fires often break out following earthquakes, caused by flammable materials being thrown into a cooking or heating fire or broken gas lines. Fires easily get out of control since the earthquake may have broken water mains or blocked roads firefighters need to use. There are many demands made on emergency response systems that slow response to fire, a deadly aftermath of the earthquake.

This phenomenon of nature is a very deadly force. It can take the lives of people, destroying buildings, and changing the environment completely. The only way to handle the situation is to be very cautious. Necessary precautions and safety are the main factors. Still, earthquakes will always be considered unpredictable and deadly.
