Justice for All?

Martin Luther King Jr. was quoted as saying "The universe is on the side of justice."  How ironic this black civil rights activist had so much faith in the judicial system during a time when African-Americans were fighting for the epitome of justice - equality.  Nevertheless, King was correct in his statement.  All over the world, especially in the U.S., society wants to see the wheels of justice spin when there has been some sort of injustice.  It's not that we're a world of heathens just waiting to persecute offenders, but rather a world where people believe that individuals should take responsibility for their actions.

King obviously believed in the system and probably felt people were out to judge and decide in the interest of fairness.  Even though King faced varying degrees of adversity throughout his life, he felt the world would ultimately do what was right.  King's statement wasn't just resigned to the U.S. government, but everywhere else as well.  He really believed justice was number one on everyone's priority list.

Even though the "universe" tries hard to rule in a just manner, there are times when it is not on the side of justice.  When a criminal gets a light sentence, when a murderer isn't convicted, and when a person who committed a heinous act isn't found - these are examples of the wheels of justice being a bit too rusty or moving a little too slow.  And even though we believe we truly are a modern society, there are still those instances when things happen that shouldn't - prejudice due to race, religion, or gender, or going beyond prejudice to discrimination and actually harming people in violation of universal or natural law.  These are the times when society asks if there really does exist a system of justice that works.

Justice is when a situation is handled in a manner which all parties involved receive responsibility and punishment, if it applies, for their actions.  We are in dire need of justice in a modern society simply because people need to be aware that everything bears consequences.  If there were no worry of having to "pay" for one's actions, then people would be running amuck everyday.  We need justice to establish and uphold order in the world.
